After driver ed, will my teen be ready to drive on their own?

The short answer is no.  Driver education is a huge help, but there is more to be considered before setting your teen free onto the road unsupervised.  The ideal process: starts with an instruction permit,  then parking lot & residential street supervised practice, then driver ed, continued supervised practice, and a driver license when readiness is demonstrated.  Research indicates teens who continue to drive with their parents following driver education are much less likely to be involved in a collision as a new driver.  Consider the amount of experience the teen is starting with, their performance in school, their maturity, and their demonstrated responsibility.  Driver ed is a worthy investment, but by itself not sufficient.  In 2018, ODOT reported 91% of teen driver collisions involved teens who did not complete driver education.  This statistic appears to fluctuate between 81-91% each year.

Benefits of Driver Ed:
  • No further testing is needed at the DMV when applying for a driver license, for students completing driver ed prior to age 18.
  • Students applying for a driver license before age 18 will be required to complete 100 hours of parental supervised driving practice.  This reduces to 50 hours if the teen completes driver education first.
  • Potential for insurance discounts, shopping comparisons can yield greater savings.
  • Becoming a safe driver!
